Tappa Lane

Our clients were seeking a fun, yet modest house that echoes mid-century design with a relaxed coastal aesthetic. Creating shadows on the external cladding and exposing timber details allows the simple material palette to provide a neutral counterpoint to allow the handcrafted pendants and unique bold wallpaper and artwork to take centre stage.

The house form wraps around two sides of a triangular block to capture views of the heavily vegetated landscape behind the edge of the site. The house opens out in a wide ‘L’ shape with a protected outdoor space where the two branches of the house meet. The living wing is slightly raised, while the bedrooms are pushing down to providing a sliver of the view to the nearby tree canopy, and allow northern light to entre the main living areas.

“We just LOVE it!

The house functions well for our family, we’ve hosted play dates and dinners and it’s like living in our own resort and my kids are permanently outside or in the pool. Our kids have slept through, not all the nights, but some of them, which they’d never, ever done before. Some days it does feel a bit small, but the beauty of the trees and the creek, outweighs it, and at the end of the day, it’s made me more conscious of what we own and the function/purpose behind it.

Our favourite spots are the deck behind the pool, it’s our Saturday drink spot, the play room (very colourful, got some PAC Man neon lights to hang in between the blue stripes, an acrylic ice cream is coming and art by Billie Justice and Frida Las Vegas all Australiana kitch) and the laundry.”
