While renovating their own office, Base Architecture asked “Can we fill a gap in the local community by activate the left-over undercroft below our office?”
The first step of construction was the biggest challenge, digging out a low crawl space to allow it to have access to natural light and be a comfortable gathering space. Being partially buried, the concealed spaces offer a secret destination for locals, but once inside, it is bathed in morning light with glimpses through vegetation to neighbourhood life outside.
The location heavily influenced the spaces, with a restrained and simple material palette, reflecting a refined, honest design, appropriate to the subterranean location.
In early 2023, they continued with additional renovations, adding to the space for the growing Quincy’s community as well upgrading the coffee station fitout.
