Brisbane Specialist Centre + Brisbane Radiology

Base recently completed a groundbreaking radiology clinic in Fortitude Valley, featuring a striking, lightweight angled facade that is set back from the front boundary to create a strong street presence.

Despite the challenge of working with an existing concrete eco-skeletal structure and the existing steel beams and columns, the project achieved an overall clean and luxurious aesthetic.

The building’s facade design not only establishes a modern and unified appearance but also positions it as an iconic structure in the local area. The intricate facade incorporates custom perforated mesh, creating an organic feel with varying perforation sizes to convey lightness and obscure the underlying structure.

The internal planning was carefully designed to accommodate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), a combined Computed Tomography (CT), and X-ray facilities, with a future Positron Emission Tomography (PET) facility. The logistics of delivering and installing extremely large and heavy diagnostic imaging equipment within an existing structure and limited access whilst maintaining a commercial construction programme were major considerations during the initial design phase.

A key interior design element of the project is the inclusion of a large artificial circular skylight that sits over and mimics the proportion of the spiral staircase, seamlessly connecting two levels of the facility. This skylight not only floods the space with natural-looking light but also creates a sense of openness and connectivity between different areas, as the upper floor included lettable area for similar boutique medical specialists.

The Brisbane Radiology project is a visually engaging and functionally efficient design, featuring a dynamic facade treatment, a luxurious yet calm, stylish and welcoming interior space. These elements combine to create an impressive and practical environment for the facility.
